Listening, Learning, and Acting: OECM’s Commitment to Reconciliation

September 30, 2025

On the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, OECM paused to reflect on the truths of residential schools, honour survivors and their families, and deepen our understanding of the responsibilities we each hold in advancing reconciliation. As part of this important day, we were grateful to welcome Sarah Hopkins, Matriarch of Three Sisters Consulting, who shared her personal journey of reconnection and spoke powerfully about why reconciliation must move beyond words and into action.

Sarah’s message encouraged us to look inward, reflect critically, and acknowledge that reconciliation is long-term work that requires both individual and organizational commitment. Her teachings provided both guidance and challenge, reminding us that listening is only the beginning.

Key Reflections from Our Session

Language shapes action.

Sarah shared how relearning her language has pushed her to think “deeper but also kinder,” emphasizing that reconciliation must focus on action, not just discussion.

Land acknowledgements require action.

While land acknowledgements are an essential starting point, they must be paired with learning about the land we are on, understanding treaty responsibilities, and taking meaningful steps to honour them.

Reconciliation is generational work.

Echoing Senator Murray Sinclair’s words, Sarah reminded us: “It took seven generations to get here; it will take seven to heal together.”

Move from learning to doing.

Organizations must actively implement the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Call to Action #92, ensuring commitments translate into real, measurable change through regular check-ins and accountability.

At OECM, we recognize that reconciliation requires continuous learning, reflection, and action. We remain committed to listening deeply, educating ourselves, and embedding reconciliation principles into our culture, partnerships, and practices.
