On October 25, 2021, Anthology Inc. and Blackboard Inc. completed a merger, with the combined organization operating under the name Anthology. With their combined products and services, powered by a community of millions, they are proudly the only holistic provider of EdTech solutions and services.

The unified entity is majority-owned by Veritas Capital (“Veritas”), a private equity firm that focuses on investments in technology or technology-enabled companies. In addition, Leeds Equity Partners (“Leeds”) and Providence Equity Partners LLC (“Providence”) hold a minority stake in the company. Before the transaction, Veritas and Leeds were the majority owners of Anthology, and Providence was the owner of Blackboard.

Blackboard was formed in 1997 to help develop the Educause IMS standards group for online education technology. During this time, a student-faculty team at Cornell University worked to create an online education software product. Recognizing the high demand for a sophisticated, easy-to-use, and affordable online education software platform, the two groups merged in June 1998 to form Blackboard. Since then, the Blackboard brand has advanced learning across the Higher Education, K12, Government, and Business sectors and currently boasts over 150 million users in over 80 countries globally. Blackboard’s brand portfolio includes solutions that support Learning Management, Data and Analytics, Accessibility & Universal Design, Collaboration & Web Conferencing, Student Success, and Community Engagement.

Anthology was formed in 2020 with the merger of Campus Management, Campus Labs, and iModules. Drawing on a fully connected data experience, Anthology solutions create operational efficiencies, provide intelligence for staff and administrators, and empower institutional leaders to support and guide students on a path to success. Anthology serves over 2,000 unique colleges and universities in more than 30 countries.
